Twenty-One

We still had a few hours before the sun set completely and our deadline with Noc was reached. We decided to use that time to get me checked out by the medical staff, a much needed shower, and food.

I was told I had bruised my ribs and got them wrapped. A hot shower and then a hotter meal of some delicious Mexican food with rice, beans, and a burrito with melted cheese on top had my stomach as happy as could be, considering our current circumstances.

Evan and I set out as the sun crested the horizon and day shifted to night. I took Blood Rage with me and Odin traveled at my side.

We crossed the outer wall of the academy and then the ward before Evan spoke.

“She’s going to be okay,” Evan told me as if he could read my mind. “Teri, I mean. She’s going to make a full recovery.”

“I almost killed her,” I remarked, shaking my head, trying to sort through my feelings. “So much could have gone wrong. You were right. I shouldn’t have tried to save those orcs. Teri could have teleported us back and then she wouldn’t be lying in bed right now.”

“No, I was wrong,” Evan said, turning his head to look at me as we traveled into the woods. “You did the right thing, Jonny. If we had left the orcs, they would have been killed, or at the very least, beaten back into submission to be taught a lesson and then enslaved again.”

“Maybe,” I allowed, seeing the panic on Ted’s face again. I saw Carl as he lost control and beheaded that blue orc we found torturing its green counterparts. “We have a lot of work to do with the team, and that includes me.”

“We’ve come a long way from penthouse office suites and private photo shoots,” Evan said with a long sigh.

“That was you,” I teased my friend. “I was more the face of Hydroxycut campaigns and purgatory in LA traffic, driving from casting call to casting call.”

“Oh right, my bad,” Evan said with another of his easy smiles. “I’m proud of us though, right? Not everyone can go from zero to orc savior in ten months. I mean, look at us. We have our own company, we get to pay the government an exorbitant amount of taxes, and we even have our very own office. And I might be a bit biased, since I decorate it myself, but the office is really nice.”

“We should do something to celebrate our first year in business,” I proposed, thinking of what we had built thus far. “Maybe axe-throwing in Las Vegas. That sounds like fun.”

It was great talking with my best friend as we maneuvered through the forest. Evan was more than my brother from another mother; he was one of those people who made you feel good about yourself when you were around them. Even I knew that was rare. I’d only experienced it a few times in my life.

Odin led the way, trotting with his black tail in the air and his nose busy huffing the wind.
